About Us

Sustainable Living Lab (SL2) addresses the innovation and sustainability needs of the 3P (Public, Private & People) sector. As practitioners of futures thinking, we implement cutting edge technologies and facilitate cross-sector collaboration for social impact. Our current focus areas are AI Literacy, Zero Waste and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Products & Services

1. Implementing impactful large-scale sustainable community programmes

Examples include: Repair Kopitiam, Plasticity and Techpals:
- Repair Kopitiam aims to combat the buy-and-throw-away culture in Singapore by saving electric household appliances 1 repair at a time. Members of the public, young and old, meet up on Sundays to have a hand at repairing appliances while learning repair skills from Repair Kopitiam coaches. We collaborate with venue partners and organisations such as Touch Community, People's Association, and Council of 3rd Age to bring dynamism and continuity to this programme.
- PlastiCity is a community project aimed to use plastic waste as a resource to create new meaningful products. Inspired by the Precious Plastics movement, we built it's own plastic recycling machines to upcycle plastic waste at a domestic level.
- Techpals is an inter-generational product development programme, aimed at solving problems in the community. This 8 weeks cycle encourages technology literacy, enabling participants to be makers with technology rather than a user.

2. Sustainable Innovation for corporate and communities

For corporates: SL2 co-runs the Sustainable Development Goals Corporate Innovation Lab (SDG-CIL) programme with UNDP Global Centre for Technology, Innovation and Sustainable Development and ICMG. Stakeholders undertake a series of activities to deepen their understanding of the SDGs, generate ideas and develop pilot projects for testing and implementation in the real world.

For communities: SL2 runs community innovation challenges with a focus on the SDGs, Repair, as well as Plastic upcycling programmes

3. Technology Readiness for corporates and communities

As an organization that is foresight driven, we recognize the geo-strategic importance of Artificial Intelligence, as it fast becomes one of the core technologies that powers the global digital economy of the future. We also recognize that uneven rates of AI readiness will lead to a widening of the digital skills gap. AI can provide new ways of approaching global problems and meaningfully improve people's lives. SL2 equips corporates and communities with AI knowledge for social and environmental impact. Over the course of 2019, we have had the opportunity to work with clients to develop several AI Readiness products in the form of training workshops, course materials and technology activities aimed at audiences across Asia and Europe.

4. Futures Thinking for SMEs

As big corporations move forward with sustainability initiatives to save energy, improve efficiency and build sustainable supply chains, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are following suit. They no longer dismiss sustainability as merely good intentions, but as a key business driver and strategic differentiator for brands. Sustainability is about looking long term; recognising that emerging trends and our actions today will affect our operating reality years later, and using that insight to help us to prepare for the future.
